WEATHER AND CLOTHING

When it comes to all of our hunts for desert mule deer, Coues deer and aoudad sheep, they are for the most part very similar. All hunts are spot and stalk.

A versatile layering system is ideal here. During our aoudad, Coues deer, or mule deer season, the weather can change very quickly. Throughout our season, from mid-November through mid-February, the weather could be anywhere from 85 down to 15 degrees.

What we tell everyone, is to plan for anything. From our lodge, we will be launching in and out every day, and you can't have to much stuff. Again, a very versatile layering system is best.

OPTICS

We do lots and lots of glassing, so a good pair of 10x42 or 12x50 binoculars is a must. All of our guides carry spotting scopes with tripods, but we always recommend that you bring one.

BOOTS

A comfortable pair of hunting boots with good ankle support is a must. We have some hunts where you may not end up doing a ton of walking and then there are others where we are on foot for a few hours. Insulated and waterproof boots aren't necessary, but definitely wouldn't hurt during the winter months.

Other necessary items include leather gloves, beanie, and a hat.

Gun Calibers

For aoudad, we prefer our hunters using a .270 Win. or larger, with good solid bullets. I always tell everyone when they ask "What gun should I bring?" .300 calibers are the best for aoudad. Within that category, bring whatever you shoot best and are most comfortable with.

Aoudad are very, very tough animals with a much different vital system than what you may be used to on mule deer, or other North American animals. You are usually taught to shoot everything behind the shoulder. With these sheep, you do not. They are a Barbary sheep from Northern Africa. All of their vitals are much lower and quite a bit more forward than most North American species. For the absolute best shot placement, you want to come up just a little over 1/3 of the way up from the very bottom of shoulder and punch through them. This is also why shooting a much more solid bullet is key.

For our mule deer and Coues deer hunts, we recommend no smaller than a 270 Win. and again, with good solid bullets.

ONE LAST THING TO KNOW:

For anyone wanting to come on a hunt with us you need to get very comfortable with making shots from 150-450 yds off of shooting sticks. If you have some you just absolutely love, please feel free to bring them. There is a chance you may get to lay down on a bipod in a specific situation, but for the most part, you will be making most all the shots from a sitting position with shooting sticks.

Thanks for trusting us,
